The City Course

12 – 16 September 2011

For a unique, insider’s perspective on a career in the City, come on our long-running and successful City Course. During the week you will visit prominent City employers and institutions. You will participate in employer-led business games and listen to presentations and graduate panels about the range of City careers.

At each employer visit you will get the opportunity to meet and network with recent graduates working within the firm, representatives from the graduate recruitment teams and sometimes more senior employees. You’ll start early, work hard, and come away with a detailed understanding of how the City works.

The programme covers investment banking, management consultancy, accountancy, commercial law, risk management, and more.

  • Slaughter and May

An example of a typical day:
Morning: Visit the Financial Services Authority in Canary Wharf where you will get the chance to take part in a business game, listen to a panel of graduates talk about their experiences working in the City and network with current FSA employees over lunch.

Afternoon: Visit Accenture’s offices near the Old Bailey. Listen to a presentation by Accenture employees about what is involved in Management Consultancy followed by a business simulation game in smaller groups.

Cost
£96. There will be a limited number of bursaries worth 50% of the fees available for students currently in receipt of hardship funding, details will be sent out on request to those who are successful in their application for the course.

This event is exclusive to current students from colleges within The Careers Group, University of London consortium. Any other applicants are not eligible to apply.

You will not be asked for payment until you have been accepted on the course.

PLEASE NOTE: There is an administration charge of 10% of the total booking on all cancellations and refunds cannot be given after 5pm on 5 September.

How to apply
Application is by CV and Covering letter.

Your application should cover the following common competencies required for a career in the finance sector:

  • the ability to work well in a diverse team;
  • effective communication skills;
  • strong numeracy and analytical skills;
  • commitment and drive to excel;
  • a creative and innovative approach to problem-solving;
  • excellent organisational and time management skills;
  • the ability to lead and positively influence others.

It should also include the following information:

  • The name of the university you are currently studying at
  • The subject and title of your course
  • The year you will graduate
  • Email address and telephone number
  • Whether you need a work permit to work in the UK
